Toroid coils. Who needs them? Well, the fact of the matter is we all need toroid coils—particularly custom toroids. What are toroid coils you ask. In a sense, you might dunk a toroid in your coffee every morning, a donut that is—the inner tube you use to float on in the water or the hula hoop you had as a kid—again, in a geometric sense, those are all toroids. The term toroid essentially describes the shape of a plain donut. Toroid is the geometric description of an annular shape that is achieved by wrapping a circle with another circle that is on an independent axis external to the original shape. In essence, a plain donut. Do we dunk toroid coils or custom toroids in our coffee? Not very likely, not unless you’re partial to the flavor of powdered iron or ferrite because, for the electrical and electronics industry, toroid coils are predominately manufactured from these metals.

Toroid Coils for Transformers and Inductors

In today’s ever growing and innovative electrical and electronics industry, new technologies and products are evolving and brought to market on a continual basis. Electrical and electronics designers and engineers are engaged in a constant race to apply the latest theories and designs to create and market products that make our lives easier and more enjoyable. These electrical and electronic products will employ highly sophisticated circuitries that rely on a broad spectrum of toroid coils and custom toroids that are used in the manufacture of an equally wide variety of transformers and inductors.

Because of the increasing complexity and sophistication of today’s electrical and electronic circuitries, transformers and inductors are required to perform within highly specific parameters, and to do this, toroid coils must be designed and configured in numerous unique ways—custom toroids being the result of these highly individualized designs. Once the specific material, size, and specific shape has been determined, custom toroids are wrapped with numerous layers of copper wire in a likewise unique fashion—the end result being custom toroids for custom designed circuitries. You will find toroid coils in products such as:

  • Information technology components
  • Computer components
  • Home entertainment and personal electronics products
  • A wide variety of medical imaging and diagnostic devices
  • Avionics and communications devices for the aviation industry
  • A broad spectrum of lighting controls
  • Manufacturing machineries
  • Robotic applications
  • Scientific instrument manufacturing
  • Automobile components
  • Active solar power applications
  • Controls for motors and much more

In short, we all need toroid coils and custom toroids. Many of the products we use and enjoy every day would not be possible without the use of these critical electrical and electronic components. So the next time you dunk a donut or float on an inner tube, think about all the wonderful, exciting, useful, and entertaining things toroid coils and custom toroids do for you and me.
